GO7007 Driver for PS3 Linux

Introduction

MythTV runs on PS3 Linux with Plextor ConvertX TV402U and GO7007 Video4Linux2 driver.

Visit my blog entry (in Japanese): Hogememo: MythTV on PS3 Linux

Patches

GO7007 driver lacks compat ioctl routines for 32bit userland/64bit kernel configuration. And Video4Linux2's compat-ioctl32.c seems quite incomplete. These patches fix the problem on PS3 Linux. Not yet tested well, it just works for me.

Of course, there's no problem with ppc64 userland on ppc64 kernel. :-P

Hey guys, has anyone tried this yet? So, after finally installing MPlayer, I had a video that I wanted to check out on HD-DVD, Pirates, actually. Well, I popped it into the PS3, then in Nautilus noticed that the drive was mounted. So, I went to the video_ts, and opened some of the files. It actually worked! I was able to play it from the DVD on MPlayer. Well, it needed tweaking because since it was HD-DVD the buffer rate was slow, so the video was slow, because it said there are too many video frames in the buffer. So, then I right clicked and copied it to my Desktop folder. And, it copied it. Shouldn't it be harder than that? When I ran it from the file and not the DVD it was still slow, so it seems to be a processing problem(Probably). On a side note, when a Blu-ray disc is inserted, it doesn't mount it, but it does say unable to mount, and it lists the movie. So, at least something is getting read. I think there are so many possibilities with this, but I don't know where to begin. I just wanted to get this out there. It would be funny if it was easy to read and play HD-DVDs with our Blu-ray PS3 with YDL. I am thinking about posting a video showing it, but I am about to get pretty busy at work. Take it easy guys.

I'd love to see an hd-dvd playing on your ps3. Please let us know when you have a video! All this is too overwhelming for a linux n00b like me.

I bet PS3 will be fuming about this.

@#1

You got an HD-DVD to be read through the Blu-Ray drive?! This is huge! You're going to have to go into more detail. Make a video!

I will post a video as soon as I can. I am a researcher (Cell & Molecular Biology), and I have this huge presentation coming up so I am pretty busy. I will try, and do it as soon as I can. Basically though, I bought Pirates(google it!), and it comes in a DVD and HD-DVD version. After installing MPlayer, I inserted the HD-DVD, and I could open files and play the movie with MPlayer, there was a frame buffer problem, but I think that was because of a problem with the MPlayer I downloaded and compiled. Anyways, as I have gotten to think, can HD-DVDs be read as regular DVDs in a regular DVD player, because maybe that is how it works because in YDL the drive acts as a DVD-drive, even though I have yet to get a DVD to play. I just want to keep people up to date, so that maybe others can work on this.

The "HD-DVD" referred to here must be a normal DVD media containing h264-encoded hi-resolution material, and is probably not a "real" HD-DVD. (but should be quite CPU-intensive to decode, yes)

Looks pretty good, but I need more details.

We're working on a how-to and hope to post it soon.

I definitely could use a how-to on this on. I have spent some time trying to get it wok. On the subject of the HD-DVD on PS3. I have both the DVD version and "HD-DVD" version of Pirates, and you can see that the "HD-DVD" is a better quality than the regular version. Either way, it shouldn't be that easy to copy the files onto YDL. All I did was copy it from the "HD-DVD" folder to my desktop.

for everyone HERE.... the first poster IS NOT playing an acutal HD DVD, its a WMV-HD video on DVD medium.

Go here to find out more:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirates_%28Porn_Film%29

the Pirates DVD set is Pr0n, and the 3rd disc is a high def video but in WMV-HD

I'm not advocating this product nor am I a representative of the company the sells it. I can also not offer a link as to where one would purchase this device. I'm simply passing on information.

thanks for that anonym you will still need an hdcp compliant monitor but it does add the flexibility of having an extra dvi input.

i just wanted to discuss something that many people may not know. the reason blu-ray holds more is not because of manufacturing differences of the disk. its the way the disk is written and read. a blu-ray disk player uses a smaller laser to real the data, a blue/violet laser that is much smaller and more presise then standard red lasers. hd-dvd uses a much more precise red laser and lens to more exactly focus the laser. both uses lasers and the blu-ray laser can create the same range as hd-dvd, the hd-dvd can not create as high a range as the blue laser (an understanding of the dynamics of light is needed to fully understand why). so in all real sences blue ray is capable of playing HD-Dvd at a hardware level. and they have out a blu-dvd player that does both formats. the only thing keeping it is the drive doesn't know it should decrease the range it looks for because it need only look at the range for cds, dvds and blu-ray disks. sony the creator of blu-ray wont yet concede loss because they have not lost, so they have no valid reason to allow a competitors technology to play on their hardware. i however in the future see sonys plan finaly finishing.

if blu-ray wins the next-gen video wars then HD-dvd will become part of an extended standard. they will likely buy out the rights to the technology and provide it as an extension of blu-ray. we will even likely see ps3 games put on HD dvd to reduce cost. this is because most blu-ray players comform to the ability to alter the standard. when the 200G blu-ray disks come (because blu-ray already has this capacity it just cant be created to withstand the stress of play or burn)we may see hd-dvd perfected as part of a low capacity disk medium (allowing manufacturers to lower cost by using a less compact disk if they do not need one.) so the ps3 will play games with the following standards within the next 5 years in my opinion (if blu-ray wins) ps1-cd, ps2-cd, ps3-cd, ps3-dvd, ps2-dvd, ps3-hd-dvd, ps3-BD)

This must be a h0ax, I've not be able to find any documents on anyone being able to replicate what you have done.

Where's the detailed description?

I'm starting to think that no one has MythTV running on the PS3 in a matter where it's actually watchable.

I've tried compiling various version of MythTV from CVS and also using pre compiled binaries on YDL and Fedora and i couldn't get a decent framerate or sound that didn't break up :(

Sweet project! This is much better than having the 360 as a Media Center extender because of all the flexibility. I have an HDhomerun and I talk about on my blog jarkhd.blogspot.com and I think because the Silicon Dust HDHomerun is networked to stream the video it may be easier than getting a USB tuner to work with the PS3.

You have been found out pr0n man, but hey who am I to judge you pr0n dude. A researcher in Cell & Molecular Biology, I am sure that wouldn't go down to well if they new you were into HD Pr0n.

Anon... grow up! Nobody gives a crap about your opinion. If you're not into "pr0n", go jerk it to that picture of mom you keep in your pocket. Spare the world your thin veil of disgust you childish closet perv.

I have not formally looked into your statements about understanding dynamics of light in order to understand why Blu-ray is able to gain a higher density of data on the same size of disc. Red lasers work in the red and infrared spectrum don't they? (Somewhere between 630 nm and 1000 nm wavelength) Blu-ray laser is in the blue spectrum 400 nm to 490 nm wavelength. Wavelength is smaller in the blue while the frequency is higher than red.

So, as the disc is spinning a blue laser can burn data in a smaller packetized format per surface area. Likewise more can be read per surface area. It follows then that you need a larger memory buffer for the data while also
being a faster memory buffer for the data to be transferred to and from the disc.

This is essentially the only hardware difference between formats, HD and Blu-ray. It makes it plain to see why Blu-ray should be able to read and burn HD with a simple embedded firmware upgrade. The firmware (software) would simply need to know the formatting sequence a.k.a. packet size, header etc. to be able to code or decode the HD onto a blu-ray player/burner.

Another note to this is that it may be necessary to use different materials in the disc to burn the blu-ray information as the wavelength is smaller and takes a higher wattage to burn the same materials to a depth that can be read later. The wavelength is smaller which allows it to pass through materials easier, meaning less impedance, this means more photons are needed at this wavelength to burn the same material. Infrared is larger
wavelengths and tends to impact more atoms of material so enough heat to burn the material with less wattage(power).

I dont know if it they have different discs for Blu-ray burning as opposed to HD but if they do that (above exp-lanation) would be why. So, a material with higher density would better suited for Blu-ray.

the disc u played is the same as the Terminator 2 hi-def which is a hi def WMV NOT a HD-DVD.i have a HD DVD drive and a ps3 and a bluray burner and u can definatly NOT play HD-DVD on a bluray drive.it is possible hook up the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive to your ps3 via usb if it is running linux but u have to rip it using dumpHD and the play the decrypted files.A software player for linux would be required to play HD DVD on the fly but one does not exist yet unfortunatly

Seems like another useful ps3 feature.

The Virgin V+ box is by far the best PVR out there and I don't see why you would want to waste your PS3 HDD space for TV shows.

I don't think that Sony will be very happy with this product! Even though I think it's pretty awesome and really good and new way of using the PS3 :)

Why would sony be unhappy. The more different ways you can use the PS3 the more of them they will sell.
