Calibrate Your PS3 Video Using Blu-ray Discs

There is a hidden easter egg in Sony Blu-ray movies. Sony added HD Test Patterns to help with video calibration of the Blu-ray player in this case the PS3 and the HDTV panel.

Now to access this on the PS3:

  • Hit the Triangle button when you are at the main menu of the DVD. You'll see several disk options along with numbers.
  • Using the Sixaxis controller enter 7-6-6-9 (Guess what SONY's customer relations number is (800) 942-SONY (7669))
  • This will take you to the test patterns. Use the Skip button to page through the patterns. (For House of Flying Daggers: Please note that due to an error in the Sony encoder used to author the disc, blacker-than-black and whiter-than-white portions of the video signal have been clipped, essentially rendering the Brightness and Contrast calibration patterns useless.)
  • Some Blu-ray movies have more screens than others.
I would test it out but I'm not sure I want to open Ricky Bobby.

Here is a sample test pattern. I'm not sure if there is any harm in using this JPG in the PS3 Photo Viewer and using it to calibrate.

Here is how to calibrate your HDTV using a test pattern.
